Are we really about to see the end of HD DVD?
Apparently we may have a winner in the high-definition format war before too much longer. And as much as I hate to admit it, it ain’t gonna be HD DVD.
I guess I’m just mostly upset because I just got a HD DVD player for Christmas, so life will suck just a little bit if I can’t get new discs in a few short months. Now I know how my Dad felt about 2 months after he bought his LaserDisc player. Remember those, kids? They weren’t around very long before we were introduced to DVDs. Suddenly, it became really not so cool to have a movie on a disc that looked like an old album. ‘Cause hadn’t we just killed those things off too with CDs?Â
Technology moves way too fast sometimes.
According to an article from Home Media Magazine, we may hear something about Toshiba dropping the HD DVD format in a matter of weeks.
I’m sad. I’m a little depressed, but I should have known this was coming.
I got an email from Netflix the other day that a ton of other people got. Basically the email said, "Sorry you made the wrong decision in the format war, but we’re dropping HD DVD in a couple of months. Sorry about your luck."
I wasn’t mad. At least not at Netflix. Best Buy came to the same decision, too. Bummer.
I was mad at myself for being wrong. I’ve told people from the beginning that HD DVD would win out eventually. I thought it was the better format. Better menus, better features. And I was kind of hoping that there was still some of the VHS/Beta voodoo going around to curse Sony just one more time. Now there’s a company that I just can’t stand.
Maybe that had something to do with it, too.
Sadly, I guess I’m just going to have to come to terms with the fact that HD DVD is slowly running out of gas and there’s not really a lot that anyone can do about it. I’ve got a few discs and I’m sure they will get pretty cheap once the news finally drops so I’ll pick up a few more.
Not like my dad who still to this day has only one LaserDisc. Poor guy. He still talks about how good the movie looked.
I’m sure I’ll be the same way about 15 years from now, talking about something called HD DVD.
Blah.
