Download of the week: Software for Starving Students
Available for both Windows and Mac users, Softwarefor.org has released another bundle of free and open-source software for students (or for anyone that needs some good software and doesn’t want to pay an arm and a leg for it). I’m a big fan of open-source software for two reasons:
- In most cases, it’s free of charge. However, most developers of open-source software do accept donations and if you like their products I highly encourage you to support them.
- Open-source software is developed by groups of people from all over the world, sometimes with thousands of contributors. When you have that many people working to make a quality product, things go much more smoothly and any problems can be dealt with very quickly.
Some of the software included in the Software for Starving Students bundle includes the fantastic OpenOffice.org productivity suite, Audacity audio editor, Firefox, and tons of other great software that I highly recommend. Even if you have a paid version of something that does what any of these titles do, it’s worth it to check these offerings out and compare. You many find that you like the open-source better than the standard software.
One note, the download comes to you in the form of a disk image. You’ll need to have some software to burn that image to a disk if you don’t already have one. Mac users can just drag the DMG file to their burner, but Windows folks will need to have something like Nero or Active ISO Burner - which is free. Software for Starving Students is available for both Windows and Mac.
